Artificial intelligence expert Lee Hickin departs Microsoft to become National AI Centre director

Lee Hickin, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence policy lead for Asia, has departed the tech giant after more than six years to become the new director of the National AI Centre (NAIC).

The NAIC was established in 2021 to support and accelerate Australia’s AI industry. Its inaugural director, Stela Solar, herself a former Microsoft executive, stepped down from the role last year and is now managing director for data and AI at Accenture ANZ.

Federal industry and science minister Ed Husic announced Hickin’s appointment as the new NAIC director on the weekend via LinkedIn.

“Lee’s deep understanding of AI and how to make the most of it in industry, alongside his involvement in shaping AI policies with Government make him an ideal fit for the centre,” he said.

“Bringing to the role his 30 years of commercial experience at leading tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon, Lee has contributed to key Government initiatives such as the Singapore AI-Verify committee, the NSW AI Advisory Committee, and Australia’s Federal Government AI Action Plan.”

Hickin had previously worked with the National AI Centre (NAIC) to help formulate an AI safety standard, and had been collaborating globally on developing policies around the responsible use of AI.

On LinkedIn he responded to Minister Husic saying: “I am excited to join and get started in helping to drive Australia’s AI future” as NAIC director.

“Those of you who know me will know I have long been an advocate for the positive potential for AI in our lives, communities and industry,” he said.

“Coupled with my work on establishing solid practices for the Responsible use of AI – I am confident Australia has a strong AI powered economy ahead of it.”

Last year the NAIC held its first startup sprint and more than 190 early-stage startups applied to be part of the program, with a long list of 35 whittle down to 10 finalists over the 10-week course.
