Greg Austin

Greg is an Adjunct Professor at the Australia China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney. He led the Cyber Power and Future Conflict Program at the International Institute for Strategic Studies for three and half years until January 2023. He was formerly a professor at the University of New South Wales (Canberra) where he set up its Master’s Degree in cyber war and peace. He has worked in Europe for 15 years, in peace NGOs and at the world-renowned peace studies centre at Bradford University. Five years at ANU in international relations. Roles in government and public policy in Australia (defence intelligence, Senate Committee Secretary, Ministerial Adviser). Published ten books as author, co-author, editor or co-editor, including “National Cyber Emergencies:, “Cyber Security Education”, “Cyber Security in China”, “Cyber Policy in China”, “China’s Ocean Frontier”, “Japan and Greater China”, and “The Armed Forces of Russia”. As Vice-President of the EastWest Institute from 2006-2011, he led its work on cyber security, counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism, including leadership and supervision of research output. He held a Senior Visiting Fellowship in the Department of War Studies at Kings College London from 2012 to 2014. He has consulted for the UK Ministry of Defence, the Cabinet Office and the Foreign Office, as well for Australian government agencies.
